Everyone saying "you dont need to remove the stone to know the weight" with an old european cut especially, yes you'd have to. you can determine a rough weight, but because of the old usually uneven cut you cant put an exact weight on it. For a modern brilliant cut its not really necessary. Any jeweller would go on the lower side of pricing when a stone cant be taken out. You cant correctly determine the colour of a setted stone. If you dont trust the people you buy from/want to sell to. You are at the wrong place.

This jeweler is a whole con artist, thief and liar. She knows that the old European diamond is exceptionally valuable especially to those whom know about jewelry from years gone by. The yellow of that stone is also fine. Both of those rings are valuable and in this case go to another jeweler. As a general rule of thumb never let anyone remove your stones from the setting unless you can oversee the entire process. If you find one willing to let you watch. Keep a keen watch for stone swapping that can happen in one second. When your looking for an estimate of value think of it like. getting an estimate for court and get three. However, You if your seeking information on antique or older jewelry then look for jewelers that specializes in that kind of jewelry. Lastly, if they are going to resize down, or change the setting always have them give you the weight, of the after you see them remove the stones and you hold the stones while they weigh them. (stones should be secure in a ziplock bag at least) Get them to write down the weight. and sign and date it giving you a clear copy. Make certain again in writing that you want all gold, silver or platinum retuned to you.. After all you paid for it at that weight.
